This book was written in response to the enthusiasm shown for the book, The Burgess Bird Book for Children. Parents wrote the author, asking for information on other animals. So in order to help children understand and know mammals in particular, Mr. Burgess wrote this book, and kept the subject just mammals. It is written in story form, as each animal is introduced and described. His hope was that children would get to know the animals, and want to develop such an interest that they would work toward preserving the animals of North America. An idea that now seems way before the times!
The Burgess Animal Book for Children was published in 1920 by Little, Brown, and Company, Boston, MA. It was written by Thornton W. Burgess, and illustrated by Louis Agassiz Fuentes.
